En heterogen groupp av medfödda rubbningar som karakteriseras genom upprepade attacker av snabbt progredierande slapp förlamning eller myotoni. Gemensamt för dessa tillstånd är en mutation som kodar alfa-underenheten till natriumkanalen i glatta muskulaturen. Fluktuerande nivåer av kalium i serum förekommer ofta. Periodisk paralys kan också förekomma sekundärt efter tyreotoxikos och andra tillstånd.
A heterogenous group of inherited disorders characterized by recurring attacks of rapidly progressive flaccid paralysis or myotonia. These conditions have in common a mutation of the gene encoding the alpha subunit of the sodium channel in skeletal muscle. They are frequently associated with fluctuations in serum potassium levels.
