En grupp grundämnen som innehåller skandium, yttrium och lantanoiderna. Den historiska bakgrunden till namnet jordartsmetaller är att de inte påvisades i sin rena form, utan som oxider. De var dessutom mycket svåra att renframställa. Trots benämningen "sällsynta" utgör de tillsammans ca 25% av alla metaller i jordskorpan. Många har fått sina namn efter den första fyndplatsen, Ytterby på Resarö i Uppland.
