En familj anadroma fiskar bestående av lax, öring, vitfisk och harr. De utgör de viktigaste mat- och jaktfiskarna och lever i norra Atlanten och norra Stilla havet, både ute till havs och längs kusterna samt i Stora sjöarna i USA.
