Molekyler som binder till andra molekyler, särskilt ifråga om små molekyler som binder specifikt till större molekyler, t ex ett antigen som binder till en antikropp, ett hormon eller en neurotransmittor som binder till en receptor, eller ett substrat eller allosterisk effektormolekyl som binder till ett enzym. Ligander kan även utgöras av molekyler som avger eller tar upp ett elektronpar för att bilda en koordinerad kovalent bindning med den centrala metallatomen i ett koordinationskomplex.

A molecule that binds to another molecule, used especially to refer to a small molecule that binds specifically to a larger molecule, e.g., an antigen binding to an antibody, a hormone or neurotransmitter binding to a receptor, or a substrate or allosteric effector binding to an enzyme.
