Däggdjur tillhörande familjerna Delphinidae (havsdelfiner), Iniidae, Lipotidae, Pontoporiidae och Platanistidae (sötvattendelfiner, floddelfiner). Det generella namnet delfin används för små valar (Cetacea) med spetsig eller näbbliknande nos och strömlinjeformad kropp, medan tumlare är små valar med trubbig nos och mer kompakt kroppsform.
